The brief for this short film commissioned by Discovery Channel EMEA, was to depict the ecological imprint we leave behind by not recycling our rubbish. An animated time lapse effect follows the decomposition of a tin can over 50 years. Decay never looked so beautiful. “Carbon Footprint” is one of the most believable time-lapse sequences achieved with completely digital techniques. It features photo-real snow and ice in minute detail showing the spectacular decomposition of the soda can.
The entire short was conceived and created by Jellyfish Pictures. The production team used a wide variety of techniques and tools, including projection mapping, HDRI, high-resolution models and global illumination to create one seamless shot. Proprietary custom shaders contribute to the fine texture detail and overall realism of the film.
The numerous awards and accolades for this movie in the last year acknowledge a simple but clever idea pushing the boundaries of CG, executed with precision and beauty.
